Today I would like to tell you about an author, speaker and editor of Indian origin, Satish Kumar, which I had the chance to listen to recently at a conference organized by the Scientific and Medical Network. His message, at the same time simple, deep and inspiring, touched me – and I wanted to share it with you.
Satish Kumar is no ordinary thinker. A former Jain monk, disciple of Mahatma Gandhi, he dedicated his life to non-violence, ecology and a holistic vision of the world. He is best known for his pilgrimage for peace 12,000 kilometers on foot across the world, without money, to deliver a message of peace to the nuclear powers in the 1960s. Founder of the Schumacher College and editor-in-chief of the journal Resurgence & Ecologist, it embodies a way of life aligned with nature, others, and oneself.
I made a video summary in French of his conference, which you can watch on my website. For English speakers, the full version is available on the website of the Scientific and Medical Network.
A triple commitment: nature, interiority, society
In a world facing multiple crises – ecological, social, spiritual – Satish Kumar offers a vision based on three complementary dimensions of commitment:
Nature : Returning to a balance with life. This requires protecting species, sustainable agriculture, and concrete action to combat climate change.
Interiority : Develop your inner world, cultivate imagination, intuition, self-awareness, in order to live aligned with one's deep values.
The company : Fight against injustices, repair divisions, promote inclusion and solidarity, particularly through the creation of strong human communities.
Three avenues of action to change the world
Faced with current challenges, Satish Kumar invites us to act in three essential ways:
Protest without violence : Oppose unjust systems, without hatred or violence.
Protect what is precious : Life, beauty, ecosystems, connections.
Transform : Develop our creativity and our ability to build new alternatives. This can involve creating living spaces, citizen initiatives, or care practices.
A powerful engine: love
Unlike a logic based on money or power, love becomes the driving force of commitment here. Love of the Earth, of other living beings, and of oneself. This love is also translated into an ethic of life:
Stay humble.
Don't be afraid.
Do not complain, nor compare to others.
Do not attack individuals, but to challenge systems and structures.
To discover…
I invite you to watch the video I made, listen to Satish Kumar's words, and share your feelings with meDoes this message touch you as much as it touched me? Does it make you want to act differently, or to cultivate your inner self more? Enjoy listening, and we'll see you soon to chat together.
