Astrology, a tool for psychology?

Astrology would allow us to define a psychic identity card, a personality; just as the physical or external traits of the person define the social identity of an individual; the zodiac card would be to the immaterial what the identity card is to the material. This idea seized me a long time ago during my studies in psychology and since then I have not stopped exploring it. It is the results of this multidisciplinary and symbolic research that I wish to share with you.

The planets, symbolic representation of personality traits

Let's assume that each planet represents a trait of that personality and that the combination of each planet with each other (aspects) and their position in the signs and houses define a unique personality for each person.

Very briefly, the sun represents will, conscious reason; the moon imagination and emotional faculties; Mercury provides information on the faculties of intelligence; Venus on the means of seduction and desires; Mars symbolizes the person's capacity for action, their combative energy, Jupiter their capacity for integration into society and Saturn their capacity for structuring and their sense of responsibility.

For now, I'm only using the seven planets of traditional astrology to simplify the presentation. But unlike traditional astrology, I don't believe there are malefic or benefic planets. Indeed, on a psychological level, each of the seven traits represents an aspect of a personality, like a puzzle, all the elements are necessary to achieve the unity of an individual.

Personalities and responsibilities

It is about appropriating these different aspects and not rejecting some of them. It should also be noted that each era or culture can value this or that character trait; this does not mean that it is to be fought but rather that it is to be integrated. This is perhaps the definition of a destiny. Negative or positive actions do not directly result from the supposed quality of the planet, nor from the aspects formed by the planets between them but from the level of consciousness of the person and the knowledge that he has of himself. Continuing the parallel with physical identity, would having blue eyes or black skin be beneficial or harmful? De facto everything depends on the latitude or the era in which you are born. It is the societies that value this or that aspect. But the planet or the aspect itself is neutral or factual.

On the other hand, the use we make of the energy that the planet carries can be positive or negative. Indeed, and we all know this, the Sun represents generosity but also pride, the moon imagination but also emotional overflow that prevents us from acting…. Only knowledge of our personality allowing the mastery of these energies allows us to achieve balance and a form of freedom. Learning astrology and its symbolic system helps to achieve this.

The freedom I mentioned is that of realizing one's destiny, or more humbly, of realizing what one is made for. Indeed, the personality thus indicated by the planets will push one to act spontaneously in a given direction. Thus, a person whose dominant personality is Jupiterian will act in a more generous way. If Saturn dominates, the person will have a structuring and responsible role, particularly with regard to society. Because astrology defines a double system of understanding: of oneself in relation to oneself but also of oneself in a given environment (society, culture, etc.).

These few hypotheses allow us to outline the broad outlines of a theory of personalities based on 10 dominant personalities expressing themselves in identifiable ways. The approach is not new; Hippocrates already classified personalities according to the elements: fire, earth, water and air, thus obtaining 4 temperaments. Other more recent theorists (Cattel, Costa & McCrea…) have relied on psychometric tests to define personality traits. So why not start from the symbolic system provided by astrology?
