Discern, choose and...act

Over thirty years of experience in negotiation and mediation in France and abroad in environments as varied as international organizations, businesses, associations and ministries has led to the development of a model for decoding situations.

This model was built from the observation of three characteristic behaviors of human beings: needs that answer the question of why, and finally, values that refer to the question of how. Knowing and identifying these factors allows us to better understand ourselves and the Other, whether an individual or an institution. This also allows us to adopt the right attitude to respond to a situation, particularly a crisis situation, or to resolve a conflict, among the 12 possible attitudes.

The study of the functioning of the brain has made it possible to build this model which is intended to be pragmatic and useful in everyday life and which achieves syncretism between different scientific or humanist approaches.

Following the various upheavals experienced since the 1990s, and after a period of disarray, reflections are beginning to take shape around the concept of a new societal project, a new paradigm whose foundations would be "balance and awareness."

The book “Decipher, Choose and… Act” is part of this movement.

First, he attempts to establish a bridge between science and humanist traditions by starting from the postulate that all human functioning is identical to that of the brain:

  • Three types of behaviors like three types of brains;
  • A brain response to stimuli that triggers actions aimed at seeking satisfaction of needs;
  • An evolution of the cortical system with two hemispheres, three brains including a higher brain in six layers and composed of cortical areas with specialized functions; seven fundamental values which serve as guides or reference values and which define an evolutionary system inherent in the development of human consciousness
  • A six-layer cortical structure that can be compared to the unfolding of any situation (one-off or life itself) in six stages;
  • A network operation thanks to neurons which, depending on the stages of information processing, receive or transmit information and a dynamic human functioning based on exchanges between the “I” and the “me”, between me and others, a personal development made possible only because the Other exists;
  • Twelve pairs of cranial nerves and twelve possible attitudes to respond to a situation, to bring together opposing values, to communicate, to exchange, to act.

Understanding the cortical model allows us to understand human functioning modes, decode situations, live better with ourselves and with others and defuse conflicts.

The book offers a model that allows us to recognize what stage a situation is at in its development, what values are at stake, what attitudes can be adopted, in order to evolve and make things evolve.

This evolution is achieved through awareness of the behaviors, values, and attitudes inherent in every human being. Awareness of oneself, one's culture, systems, and era. Awareness that allows one to decode, understand, and therefore act appropriately. Awareness that is inseparable from responsibility.

Thus, it is by applying the decoding grid proposed in the book that it is possible to define the bases of a new society, the Knowledge society.
